Emily Dickinson did not like was one of the stated purposes of the college - to convert young women to the Christian cause, finding Christ as their personal savior. She was one of the students who were declared without hope.

I think when you look at every other religion all over the world - its works based - you have to earn your way to the Kingdom. With Jesus, it's so different because we, Christians, didn't do anything to deserve Him. He literally died for us and saved us! There's nothing else like that in the world. There is no other God like that! That's why I believe in Him! And I'm thankful its not up to me, because I fail every single day but He's there to give us grace - and that's an amazing thing!
Christians are beginning to lose the spirit of intolerance which animated them: experience has shown the error of the expulsion of the Jews from Spain, and of the persecution of those Christians in France whose belief differed a little from that of the king. They have realized that zeal for the advancement of religion is different from a due attachment to it; and that in order to love it and fulfil its behests, it is not necessary to hate and persecute those who are opposed to it.
